Since 2001, we have partnered with over 100 nonprofit organizations and granted more than $20 million in cash and in-kind services.
“The talents of Social Venture Partners diligently at work in our region are so much appreciated. The collaboration resulting in stimulus funds to San Diego County supplied new prevention dollars and strengthened ongoing efforts to address homelessness. Thank you SDSVP!”
Mary Herron, Board Member, San Diego Grantmakers, Regional Task Force on the Homeless and The Parker Foundation
Investing in Success
San Diego Social Venture Partners helps nonprofit organizations become more successful in fulfilling their missions. We invest in selected nonprofits – called Investees – by providing grants and the expertise of many talented Partners to improve their business operations and put them on the road to sustainability.
How We Invest
Each year, Partners select a focus area in which to dedicate their time and resources.
A Discovery Team researches the focus area, interviews experts, and determines the greatest need in that sector. The team presents its findings to our Investment Working Group to help them determine where SDSVP can have the most impact.
Utilizing these key findings, the Investment Working Group follows a rigorous vetting process with the nonprofit applicants by evaluating proposals, listening to presentations, and conducting site visits. After a thorough review and discussion, the group votes to select Investees to receive a cash grant over a three-year period. In addition, the Partners offer non-monetary support in the form of expertise, skills, and connections to other funders, valued at $600,000 per Investee.
Strengthening Our Investments
Once selected, the Portfolio Working Group offers support and monitors the progress of all our investments. SDSVP collaborates with the Investees to improve infrastructure, including strategic planning, business operations, marketing, board and fund development, and information technology support. SDSVP complements their program expertise by strengthening their internal operations and long-term capacity for success and sustainability.
