Learn One, Do One, Teach One: A Learning Philosophy

Partners meet bi-monthly for an Impact Committee meeting to discuss our impact.

Partners are caring and informed San Diegans, ready to learn how to stretch and make an impact in their communities. To accomplish our desired impact, we have a saying here at San Diego Social Venture Partners: learn one, do one, teach one.

Learn One: We try to support Partners' learning do so by inviting Partners of varying experience to every event. This mixture of Partners allows someone in a learning space to see different viewpoints and styles in action from their peers.

Do One: Once Partners are familiar with a topic or engagement style, they are encouraged to stretch their learning by stepping up and participating. This participation can include leading a meeting, engaging in conversation, and offering up their skills.

Teach One: A newly, confident and excited Partner will be invited to share what they have learned with others to increase group knowledge, encompassing our value of continuous learning. This could be inviting Partners along to meetings and events, mentoring another Partner as they try something new, and sharing tools and resources so others can succeed.

To support this philosophy, staff and Partners alike come together to support each other and learn from our successes and failures. For example, at our last Impact Committee meeting, an SDSVP Lead Partner shared a challenge their team was facing and wanted to learn from their peers to best boost their efforts. Impact Committee Chair, Debleena Biswas, commented on SDSVP's leadership practice, saying, "This is a very interesting organization, it allows us to learn and lead at the same time." This statement summarizes the support and encouragement of the SDSVP family, while encompassing the familial and zealous attitude behind our community impact.

Supporting organizations to make community impact is our work, but supporting our community Partners is the foundation of our success. We believe in learning, doing, and teaching to cultivate a supportive and fun environment for all San Diegans.

Social Venture Partners allows the unique opportunity for caring and informed San Diegans to give in a strategic and highly skilled way. Our Partners not only donate money that is pooled into unrestricted grants for multi-year support, but they also donate their time to help nonprofits develop their infrastructure. This assistance gives nonprofits a higher level of capacity to deliver on their own missions. Both kinds of Partner contributions support each other, allowing for SVP to increase our impact by leveraging our collective skills, networks, and dollars.
